Lying between the Groot Swartberg and Kamanassie Mountains, legend has it that the town was called Dysselsdorp because so many people with the surname Dyssel once lived here! It became a recognised settlement when a mission was established here in 1838 by the London Missionary Society. One of the oldest churches in the Klein Karoo is still regularly used by worshippers and the unique Catholic church, St Conrad’s, is perched on the top of a pyramid-like hill and can only be reached on foot by climbing a winding path along which the Stations of the Cross are laid out. Experience a donkey-cart taxi ride around the town and purchase ostrich shell jewellery.
